Southwark Rise Project

Southwark Rise is a multi-stakeholder project that aims to address the complex needs of families and children living on low incomes, by actively engaging them to better understand their experiences and placing them at the heart of a process of designing responsive services.

There is general agreement about the need for joined-up working,
breaking silos and taking a holistic approach to providing services to residents. In Southwark we have already made significant steps forward, with a number of flagship innovative multi agency operations delivering services on the front line. We now want to build on this to achieve even more.

The challenges are immense when the aim is to enable people to fulfill their potential, and have the best chance in life. We are therefore trialling a new approach that seeks to understand the ways in which public services and other forms of community support are actually experienced by families. Ultimately this knowledge will enable us to reappraise the way our services are planned, designed and configured around the needs of families, and to support communities to support themselves.

The project will run from January to June 2009 with the following aims:

•     to work with families to contrast the web of services and support in Southwark, with the real experiences of families struggling to cope with material hardship and its impact on their ability to achieve their potential

•     to facilitate a shift in joined-up service delivery by focusing on customer-experience outcomes, rather than on individual service outputs

•     to work with a multidisciplinary team of frontline workers (such as GPs, teachers and social workers), residents and policy officers to understand issues affecting life chances such as low income or healthy weight, and to identify solutions that will further help services meet residents needs in the future
